(Muncie) – Ball State head football coach Pete Lembo has awarded scholarships to Dwayne Donigan and Barrington Scott, both former walk-ons for the Cardinals.
“It needs to be made crystal clear that these upgrades are based on merit and have been in the works since the conclusion of spring practice,” Lembo says. “Dwayne and Barrington have been workhorses for the football program both on and off the field. They have excelled on the field, in the weight room and in the classroom. They have earned the respect of their teammates and the coaching staff and are well-deserved of the privilege of being on scholarship.”
Donigan, a junior in 2011, is a running back for the Ball State football team. He played in the Iowa game last season and earned his second letter. Donigan played in three games in 2009.
Scott, who will be a sophomore in terms of eligibility in 2011, did not see action as a walk-on for the
Cardinals in 2010. He earned four letters for Coach Russ Issacs at Fort Wayne Snider High School and helped the team to an 11-2 record as a senior.
“The promotion of walk-ons to scholarship status is an important component of the culture we are establishing within the football program,” Lembo says. “We are all different people, but we are one football team and there must be consistent standards and expectations for everyone. The ability to reward a walk-on for their contributions and performance helps to reinforce positive competition and goal setting. It will also help us to attract more quality walk-ons to Ball State in the years to come.”
